Greetings and Salutations!

For those that were able to attend our end of the year celebration, you already know the big news. However, for those that were unable to attend, the big announcement is that Starr Hardgrove has stepped into the position of Education Director for Actors Company of Tulsa, and Yours Truly, is stepping is as the new General Director. Of course, Starr will still be an integral part of Actors Company of Tulsa as he spearheads our new education program, but with new management and a new season on the horizen, there is change in the wind.

I am both thrilled and terrified to be manning the wheel of the company as we head into our 2012-2013 season, which is entitled “Kindred Spirits Season”. Our previous season, “A Sizzling Season” ended with a bang with the Tulsa premiere of Slawomir Mrozcek’s political and absurdist comedy, “Vatzlav”. It has been one roller coaster of a year, from the silliness that was “Revenge of the Space Pandas”, to the epic drama that was “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches”. We broke some new ground, learned some valuable lessons, and made some new friends along the way. I am proud of the work we have accomplished and the upcoming season promises even more opportunities.

As I mentioned, we will be springboarding a brand new education program offering classes and workshops for the Theatre community of Tulsa. Whether a seasoned veteran or someone just beginning to spread your theatrical wings, there will be something for everyone. With the introduction of the education program will also come a focused campaign for Actors Company of Tulsa to find a permanent space. We have vastly enjoyed being able to take our productions from place to place- this has allowed us to spotlight various venues in the city and explore some unconventional spaces. However, we feel it is time that we focus our energy into finding a place we can call home. I thank everyone in advance for helping us in this endeavor as it will present multiple challenges. Yet, with challenge comes opportunity, and there are some exciting things coming down the pike for ACT.

I’m honored and humbled to be carrying ACT into the new season, and I am grateful for the opportunity. I extend my warmest thanks to all of the actors, designers, directors, and volunteers that made “A Sizzling Season” a reality, and I look forward to meeting all the new people and reconnecting with old friends that will make “Kindred Spirits Season” a success. Thank you for your continuing support of ACT.

Sincerely,

Bonny L. Downs

Actors Company of Tulsa has completed it’s first full season and we couldn’t be happier to look back on the amazing work by all of the talented individuals who have made it happen. In our first full year, we have produced the amazing plays that have spanned the far reaches of the dramatic spectrum, which included Revenge of the Space Pandas, Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, Anthony Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange, Othello, and Vatzlav. We’ve performed at the Tulsa PAC, VanTrease Performing Arts Center, Tulsa Little Theatre, Greenwood Cultural Center, and in a large circus tent at 21st and Boston. We have raised money by donating 20% of our ticket sales for such organizations as H.O.P.E. Education Outreach Prevention, Youth Services of Tulsa, Greenwood Cultural Center, and the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa. We’ve worked with more than 50 actors and provided them opportunities to express their theatre artistry on stage.

Most importantly, we’ve told 5 great stories by some amazing playwrights and brought some amazing experiences to Tulsa. With your help, we’ve done it. Thank you so much for saying that you want Actors Company of Tulsa to be here with your ticket purchases, your donations, your time, your effort, and most importantly your commitment to telling stories on a grand scale in the city of Tulsa. You are what makes the stage shine. We will be having a dinner for all of our people who have worked with us this year and reservations can be made at http://bit.ly/celebrationrsvp.

Seating is limited so an RSVP is required to attend. This dream has come a long way since some people in 2007 decided to get together and put on a show. We’ve got some great new things coming this year and with your help and support, we’ll continue to grow.

Sincerely,
Starr Hardgrove
General Manager, 2007-2012

Welcome to the very first post of our new blog. We’re beginning to connect directly with you on issues that Actors Company of Tulsa will face through our many journeys in hopes of letting you know what we are all about and maybe starting a conversation that will continue throughout the course of our history as a theatre company.

I started this company in 2007 in order to give actors opportunities that they wouldn’t normally get. I was a student in college theatre that was given amazing opportunities as a young man, and wanted to continue that for the actors of Tulsa. We were originally called “Evandrake Productions”. Evandrake was a pseudonym of mine when I took the opportunity to write my own monologue for the American College Theatre Festival. Our company produced two productions, Proof by David Auburn and Mr. Marmalade by Noah Haidle. These productions were co-produced with the help of the Nightingale Theater.

The productions came to a standstill until we produced the Threepenny Opera, again with the Nightingale, which was a full musical with about 30 people crammed in space. The production was amazing and was well received. We continued through with The Visit and Rumors until financial restraints caused us to take a break. We restructured, and moved on to in 2011 begin our first full season as Actors Company of Tulsa with Revenge of the Space Pandas by David Mamet.

This began a new era for the company and we embarked on our first full season, A Sizzling Season which included Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, Anthony Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange, Othello, and finally Vatzlav.

We begin our next season entitled “Kindred Spirits” this year with Bonny Downs stepping into the General Director position. I will be launching something very exciting and will be taking the role of Educational Director. Our company is growing and we have a lot of challenges ahead of us, but we have a good idea and we will continue to educate the Tulsa theatrical artist, connect with local business and the community and produce quality theatre that entertains, informs and enlightens the city and it’s people. Welcome to the website and welcome to the blog. We hope to carry on the conversation with you as we continue through the Actors Company of Tulsa journey.

Sincerely,
Starr Hardgrove

In conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the film, Actors Company of Tulsa brings this tale of creativity and anarchy to Tulsa. Alex DeLarge, a wayward youth, and his droogs embarque on a night of mayhem and ultraviolence that ends with Alex being arrested for murder. He is given a second chance in a new drug that will condition him against these violent tendencies and allow him to be a Clockwork Orange citizen again. Infusing the ninth symphony of Beethoven into the musicalization, Anthony Burgess’s definitive adaptation for the stage brings the story we know to life in a whole new way. Twenty percent of all proceeds go to benefit Youth Services of Tulsa. Find out more about them at http://www.yst.org.
